I've got some ideas for making this a season of giving to those who need it most, inspired by my favorite guilty pleasure, reading the hilarious blog,
Cakewrecks . Now the blog has an upside beyond the obvious one of giving me my daily chuckle. Tons of people read this blog and Cakewrecks is choosing a charity a day for the next 2 weeks and asking each of their fans to donate $1 to that charity. If you're looking for a way to get into the spirit of giving or you just want to read something funny, go to
Cakewrecks and enjoy. OK, a comedy bakery blog may not be everyone's idea of a good time, but you really should check it out, it's won all sorts of awards, and you will never look at baked goods the same way again.
Also, if you shop on line, go to
Greater Good. They sell stuff that raises money for educational, environmental, health and hunger charities. I've been doing holiday shopping with them for years and I love it.
We started celebrating Christmas before Thanksgiving, since we wouldn't be seeing Kirk's parents again until late January. The kids loved it, and we were right in lockstep with the stores which seem to pipe Christmas music right after the little ghouls get home from trick-or-treating.

Christmas at the Biltmore (The Vanderbilt estate in Asheville, NC) is gorgeous. We got to explore that holiday tradition with my parents.

The tree lighting in Clinton had the perfect 'Christmas in a small town feel.'
